Visiting Albuquerque

For more information about Albuquerque, visit their website here. If you’re looking for things to do while you’re not competing, check out the city of Albuquerque’s page here!

What's the Deal with Salsa?

You will quickly learn to answer your Albuquerque server’s question of “red or green?” with authority. Say “Christmas” if you want to sample both red and green chile, and don’t be afraid to ask for the chile on the side if you’re not sure. Honestly most of us couldn’t tell the difference, so go with whatever color you like best!

Volunteers' Favorites!

We compiled a list of our volunteers’ favorite things they’ve tried in Albuquerque!

Food:

  • Little Bear Coffee Co. – 10 min. drive from convention center. Cool cafe, nice view of mountains, wine bar at night!
  • Zendo Coffee – 10 min. walk from convention center. Yummy cafe, cool artist patio in the back.
  • Golden Crown Panaderia – 20-25 min. Walk from the hotels/convention center, delicious pizza, pastries, cookies, and unique New Mexican ice cream and shake flavors (they were out of empanadas so we couldn’t try the empanada milkshake, but we’re definitely going back to try that next time).
  • 505 Central Food Hall – A fun and contemporary food hall with a wide range of food. It has open seating that would accommodate teams of varying sizes.
  • Bar Uno – Near the hotels and has a wide range of drinks.

Activities:

  • 516 ARTS – 10 min. walk from convention center. Contemporary, nonprofit art museum. Cool spot 🙂
  • Sandia peak tram – 15 min ride up Sandia peak. The top has a restaurant, hiking trails, and great views!

Getting Around the City

The city of Albuquerque has a free bus system, and you can see the routes here. You should be able to use Google/Apple maps to navigate the buses as well. If you’re planning on driving or renting a car, paid parking is available at both the hotel and convention center.

If you’re planning on coming in a van, you likely won’t be able to fit in the convention center or hotel parking. Some nearby lots are listed below – please be sure to call ahead and make sure they can accommodate you!

Health & Safety

Albuquerque is at an elevation of 4900 feet above sea level, which is high enough to cause mild altitude sickness symptoms. Make sure to drink lots of water, eat more carbs, and be cautious with the amount of alcohol you drink.

The sunlight is stronger here too! Make sure to wear lots of sunscreen if you’re going outside for an extended period of time.
