Governance / Board Members

  • Elections held annually: Details here.
  • The average time commitment 3-5 hours/week, with roughly one committee meeting per week plus a monthly full Board meeting.
  • Board Member candidates need to be willing to learn about applicable laws and non profit best practices and develop new processes and systems.
  • Board members are required to financially contribute to the organization on an annual basis, via either personal donation or fundraising, in an amount that is meaningful to them.
  • Board members must serve on at least two Board Committees – Policy Committee, Development Committee, Finance Committee.
  • Board members may serve one additional role or be on one team in Operations, but cannot be a Department Head, the Nationals Coordinator, or the Executive Director (large roles in Operations).
  • There are currently six officer/chair positions available within the board of directors. A brief description of each is provided below, and fulfillment of one of these roles generally requires an additional time commitment of 1-2 hours per week.
    • President
      • Recommends members for committees and appointing committee chairs
      • Works in connection with the executive director to prepare board meeting agendas
      • Arranges for or takes part in new board member orientations
      • Takes the lead on the executive director’s annual performance evaluation
      • Works to recruit qualified new board members, candidates
      • Serves as the nonprofit’s spokesperson as needed
      • Takes the lead in the annual board member self-evaluation process
    • Vice President
      • Manages board meeting agendas and pre-reads
      • Plans annual Governance Strategy Meeting
      • Manages committee status reports and Board goal-tracking mechanisms
    • Treasurer
      • Manages the NAIGC’s financial records and annual budget
      • Chairs the Finance Committee
      • Handles all monetary issues for the NAIGC (payments, managing bank accounts, taxes)
    • Secretary
      • Manages meeting minutes, board activity, board records, and elections
    • Development Chair
      • Manages the Development Committee
      • Works on recruitment, orientation/onboarding, internal performance reviews, NAIGC mission/vision, and continuous improvement of the board
    • Policy Chair
      • Manages the Policy Committee
      • Works on review and improvement of all NAIGC policies

Policy Committee

  • Review and develop governing documents for consistency with applicable laws and organizational practices.
  • Ability to communicate complex / technical / legal concepts in plain English.
  • Enjoy analytical debates of what others might consider a boring topic.

Development Committee

  • Develop KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for the organization.
  • Research other non-profit best practices, attend non-profit seminars / conferences.
  • Develop and implement a year-round recruitment strategy.

 Finance Committee

  • Ability to read financial statements (income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements) or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about 501 3c non-profit laws and develop fundraising / sponsorship processes that fit within applicable laws.
Advisor
  • Officers and Committee Chairs are authorized to appoint additional Advisors at any time to help with Board projects on a case by case basis.
